Bubbly, Fizzy Stuff
About the “Duality” series:
As you may know, I grew up in rural Minnesota, but I’ve been in NYC and New Jersey now for quite some time. I have an ear for dialects and love differences in culture, slang and pronunciation. I’m not a great connoisseur of words, phrases or meanings, but I find satisfaction in comparing/contrasting fun little things. Many comparisons in this series will be MN vs NYC/NJ but there will be others. I have no idea how long this series will last but I think it will be entertaining!
Here’s Duality #1
What would you call that there drink in the glass bottle these two love birds are sharing so adoringly?
If you’re in Minnesota, you might guess Coke, Pepsi, Root Beer or Dr. Pepper, but one thing is for sure – they are definitely drinking pop. If you’re out east, it’s definitely soda. I’ve heard there are parts of the country that would call it a coke no matter the brand or flavor, is this true? If you are one of these people do tell!
I find these details so interesting.

I love this too! Like when people call a semitruck a tractor traylor, or…. there so many more, I dont remember? We will have to think of some more!
Oh my, YES – that just made me think of others. Yay fun!!
I live in Missouri and I call it pop, but it seems like for every one person here that calls it pop, there’s another that calls it soda. But, my brother-in-law’s from Tennessee and everything is Coke.
