Smooth Highways & Byways

Duality #2
In case you’re just jumping on board, the duality series is a fun little game where we discuss the differences in lingo between parts of the country and sometimes other parts of the world.
{Words are fun! Play with me, or else ;) }
So I married a Pennsylvania boy and he says some strange things. When we first started dating he would whisk me away from the city in a fast red car.  As we are driving down the highway one of these first few times he makes mention of the condition of the macadam.

“They really need to redo this macadam,” he said.

“The wuh?” I said.

“The ma-cha-dam,” as if I didn’t hear him the first time.

Apparently he was referring to what I would call the  tar road we were driving on

- otherwise known as the blacktop.

“What have I gotten myself into?” I wondered.  “Who is this guy and why does he use such funny words?!”

I got over that real quick as you can see!  But I still find the words a bit intriguing to say the least.

So, I’m curious – what do YOU call the stuff that makes up a dark-colored highway?!!!

  1. That is the weirdest word I’ve ever heard. I’m with you, tar or blacktop, but we did descend from the same gene pool :)

  2. That we did. And I’m glad for that!

  3. I’m gonna ask my pa boy about that one?! um, I think I’d call it pavement.

  4. Blacktop or tar of course!

  5. oh, pavement – a ha! And of course Prairie Chick says Blacktop!
